Eleven percent of the population has diabetes in Suriname. Diabetes is a costly disease, affecting everyone, everywhere (Data from the WHO). In Suriname a One Stop Shop for diabetes care was established in 2012 aiming to improve DM management, decrease complications and increase quality of life in general. The OSS offers entire packages targeting diabetes – healthcare, with specific attention to wound care, physiotherapy, and medical management of DM by a nurse-practitioner and physician.  This study aims to calculate the monetary burden of diabetes in Suriname including but not limited to medical costs in addition to the lack of self-care and subsequent lack of awareness of their disease. The outcome of the study will measure the effect of the OSS on the total expenditure of Surinamese Public Health Care.
